About Langston Hughes Academy

Mission Statement
The mission of Langston Hughes Academy Charter School is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and character traits necessary to succeed in high school, college and the world beyond. Our goal is to send every student to college by preparing them for the best public and private high schools in the New Orleans area.

Free Public School
Langston Hughes Academy is a tuition-free public school open to all students regardless of race, class or prior academic performance.

Extended School Day & Year
Normal school hours are 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 am to 2 pm on Friday. We have lengthened the school year from the traditional 180 days to over 205 school days. We use these extra hours to prepare our students for the finest high schools in the New Orleans area. Students at Langston Hughes Academy will spend approximately 50% more time in school than their traditional public school peers.

EXTRACURRICULARS
Students at Langston Hughes Academy can expect to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Extracurriculars enrich the learning experience and provide students with hands-on opportunities to develop and grow socially. Students at Langston Hughes Academy are currently able to participate in Book Club, Art Club, Step Team and Service Team.

End of Year Field Lessons
Students will have the opportunity to participate in weeklong field lessons (trips) to destinations outside of New Orleans. Students will visit local universities and discover local culture, food and history.

Sports
Sporting activities include but are not limited to: Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Football and Swimming.

New Orleans Jazz and Brass
Starting in the 2008-2009 school year, Langston Hughes will offer a jazz and brass band program for all students.

Communication Skills
Langston Hughes was one of the most prolific authors and communicators of all-time. Students at Langston Hughes Academy will receive instruction in persuasive writing, public speaking, debate and poetry.
